The story of The Rig focuses on a small crew left to man an oil rig in Louisiana during a storm: you�ve got the Evangeline-Lilly-esque heroine, Carey (Serah D�Laine), and her romantic interest, Dobbs (Scott Martin), dealing with her dad�s/the boss man�s (William Forsythe) disapproval of their relationship; you�ve got the fraternal struggle between an older brother, a roughneck extraordinaire, and his rookie younger brother with something to prove; and, of course,
you�ve got the sea creature/monster who�s stalking them all. It�s impossible not to note the timeliness of this film�s release: though it was shot (and re-shot/re-edited) over the course of three years, the fact that it�s making its debut now loads it with associations and themes that the filmmakers may not have even intended. The premiere last weekend came just a few months after the largest oil spill in US history, an event which I�d say drastically altered our perception of both our reliance on oil as well as our opinions of oil companies; watching the movie in this context made the renegade attitudes of the characters in The Rig much more complex than they would have been three years ago. These are headstrong characters who are accepting the general idea of risk � weathering the storm, doing hard labor in a place that vaguely resembles a penitentiary, and of course the idea that the whole works might blow up � without compunction. At times we see true adrenaline-junkieism, as characters toss off lines mentioning the danger inherent in their jobs with palpable excitement; of course, they never understood the real risk until it was dripping with slime, about to snatch them from the stairwell and murder them. These are naive characters, underestimating how much they�ve pissed off nature by disturbing it and how solidly nature can thwack them upside the heads.
